The Pulse on Club Human Resources: Where Clubs Stand on Staff Management and Workforce Initiatives

Nearly 400 managers responded to a Pulse Survey about human resource and employee issues earlier this spring to better understand how clubs are utilizing human resource initiatives and the importance of having a dedicated HR Department. Highlights from the report include:

Human Resource Department

  • 45% have a Human Resource Department, and of this group

o   95% say it is important (81% stating it is “very important”) to the overall operations of their club

o   95% stated their employees utilize the Human Resource Department

o   Only 74% have full-time head of their HR Department

§  With 72% of this group stating the head of HR reports to the GM

  • Biggest reason why a club does not have an HR Department: Club is not big enough (35%)
  • How could a robust HR Department benefit your club:

o   Leads in delivering new hire orientation and onboarding (72%)

o   Protects club from lawsuits (72%)

o   Lead club’s recruitment process (68%)

o   Employees are trained to establish club standards (67%)

o   Ensures department heads have established standards (63%)

o   Provides performance reviews (63%)

o   Ensure employees are right fit (62%)

o   Minimize turnover (62%)

o   Provide positive employee-to-employee relations (60%)

o   First place to resolve issues (60%)

o   Assists departments in systematized training processes (58%)

o   Produce happy and productive employees (54%)

o   Ensures right salary and benefits (53%)

o   Directly enhances member day-to-day experiences (40%)

Rate of frontline staff turnover:

Less than 15%: 49%

15% to 35%: 37%

36% to 50%: 2%
Over 50%: 12%

Only 39% stated they have succession plans for key staff positions
