National Club Association Partners with Fred Laughlin to Publish and Update Governance Resources

The National Club Association today announced it has established a formal relationship with private club consultant and expert Fred Laughlin to evaluate and update the governance resources it provides to NCA members. Laughlin, a principal author of Private Club Governance: A Handbook of Principles and Best Practices, published by NCA and the Club Management Association of America in 2023, will work with the association and its committees on governance publications.

“Fred is a top expert in his field and we are excited to work with him on updating our resources,” said NCA President and CEO Joe Trauger. “This is part of NCA’s ongoing efforts to improve club governance by providing club board members and their management teams the most effective tools possible through peer-reviewed best practices.”

“I am privileged to work with the NCA team that has for so many years provided leadership in club governance, culminating in its sponsorship of the Handbook, “ said Laughlin. “I look forward to working with the team to supplement the Handbook with additional materials for club boards to serve their members efficiently and effectively.”

Laughlin, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, is a longtime consultant to nonprofit boards on strategic planning, board development, governance, and leadership development. He was a partner at Price Waterhouse for 28 years, overseeing multiple management consulting units and chairing the Board committee that, during the merger of  Price Waterhouse and Coopers & Lybrand, coordinated the integration of dozens of partnerships in various countries. Since his retirement from Price Waterhouse in 2001, he has consulted with numerous nonprofit boards, including more than 100 private club boards. He holds a master’s and a doctorate degree from The George Washington University and is widely published in the private club community. He is co-author of Good Governance for Nonprofits (American Management Association, 2007).
