NCA’s Washington Weekly Update 8-9-21

Situational Awareness
The House is in recess until the day after Labor Day. The Senate is in session looking to wrap up consideration of the infrastructure package and may pivot to the budget reconciliation measure once infrastructure is completed.

Infrastructure Nearing Completion
The Senate is coming off a rare weekend session as it works toward passage of a $550 billion infrastructure package. Late last week, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released it’s estimates on the bill and indicated that it will add more than $250 billion to the deficit over the next ten years. This uptick in deficits did little to dampen the enthusiasm for passage of the bill. While cryptocurrency is not a topic most consider infrastructure, a provision related to reporting of crypto transactions created a bit of a stall over the weekend. Final passage of the bill is expected this week and the Senate will then move to consideration of the Democrat-led budget reconciliation package totaling $3.5 trillion.

House Members in Districts This Month
Members of the House of Representatives are in their districts meeting with constituents for much of this month leading into the Labor Day holiday. If you have not recently asked your Representative to visit your club, NCA encourages you to do so this month. Visits like these are good opportunities to show members of Congress the impact clubs have on employment, conservation and economic activity in their districts. If you would like assistance scheduling a visit, contact me at [email protected]. I would also be happy to provide you with suggestions of issues to discuss and/or talking points to consider. If you do have a visit planned, please let me know.

Last week, nearly 350 concerned club leaders participated in NCA’s Coronavirus Town Hall that addressed the latest news and information regarding the delta variants, vaccines and new safety protocols.

Speakers included:
Dr. Terri Rebmann, Director, Institute for Biosecurity, Professor, Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics, College for Public Health & Social Justice, Saint Louis University
Tom Lenz, JD, Partner, Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo

NCA Interviews Congressional Leaders
Since joining the National Club Association, I’ve interviewed numerous members of Congress to give you insight on the leaders I talk to in order to advance clubs’ agenda. In the current issue of Club Director, I talk to U.S. Delegate to the Virgin Islands Stacey Plaskett. She sits on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee and serves on the House Committee on Agriculture and House Committee on Budget. In the interview, Plaskett discusses her pathway to public service, her top legislative priorities for the country and her jurisdiction. Read it here.
