Change is in the Air

Fall has begun and change is in the air—in more ways than one. Here at NCA, we are transitioning from longtime President and CEO Susanne Wegrzyn to Henry Wallmeyer. Sue has been the face of NCA for more than twenty years and few NCA members can remember a time when someone other than Sue was at the helm of our organization.

Finding the right successor was no small task, but we were fortunate to find him. Henry has extensive leadership and trade association experience, nicely complemented by familiarity with the private club world through five years spent on the staff of CMAA. We can be confident that NCA is in good hands. See our interview with Henry on page 12.

The arrival of Henry at NCA is further evidence of a new era of strong partnership between NCA and CMAA. CMAA Chief Executive Jeff Morgan and the CMAA board have been working with NCA’s volunteer leaders and executive management in a spirit of cooperation and shared interest in the health of the private club industry. The discussions are focusing on opportunities for collaboration in the future, particularly in the areas of research, education and advocacy. Working from their respective mission statements, both organizations are seeking to improve efficiency, reduce overlap and create more opportunities to move the industry forward through coordinated and joint initiatives.

This government relations-themed issue of Club Director illustrates that the regulatory and legislative climate for clubs is changing as well. The Affordable Care Act continues to change the ways clubs operate since implementation rolled out this year. Our feature story reveals how some clubs are dealing with compliance of the law as well as operational and governance issues.

The upcoming changes to the Department of Labor’s overtime rule and independent contractor classification are also changing the way clubs operate. In this issue, find out what you should be doing to comply with these new rules. We also highlight ways that club leaders can form better relationships with their government representatives.

Times may be changing, but NCA remains committed to serving private clubs. Please let us know if you have any comments about the changes addressed in this issue of the magazine, or generally about the developments and the direction of NCA.
