Washington Weekly Update 10-26-20

Situational Awareness

The House will not be in session until after election week. The Senate is in a short session this week to clear the Supreme Court nominee, Judge Amy Coney Barrett.

Supreme Court Nominee Vote This Week

The Senate is in session this week for one purpose—to take a final vote to confirm Associate Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett. The vote is expected sometime today (October 26) and looks to break down on party lines. Maine Senator, Susan Collins, is the only Republican to announce her intention to vote against Judge Barrett. The White House is planning on holding a swearing in function soon after she is confirmed. Once confirmed and sworn in, Justice Barrett will be President Trump’s third selection to the Supreme Court.

No Stimulus Deal Before Election

After an intense week of back and forth negotiations between Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), a deal does not look likely prior to the November 3 elections. The main sticking points continue to be aid to state and local governments. While enactment of a stimulus package may not be possible before election day, the two sides are continuing talks to arrive at some agreement that could be drafted and acted upon post-election. Secretary Mnuchin and Speaker Pelosi are scheduled to speak later today about a new offer from the White House.
