Senate Tees up Labor Nominees
Senate leaders announced a slate of nominees that would be considered in October. Key nominations that will be under consideration include David Keeling to be the Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Jonathan Berry to be Solicitor for the Department of Labor (DOL) and Andrew Rogers to be the Administrator of the Wage and Hour Division at DOL. While the Senate is dealing immediately with the potential of a government shutdown on Oct. 1, it that would not prevent the Senate from continuing approve nominees during that time.
Senate Labor Committee to Consider NLRB Nominees
On Wednesday, Oct. 1, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions is scheduled to consider the nominations of Scott Mayer and James Murphy to be members of the National Labor Relations Board. Murphy is a former NLRB career staffer and Mayer was chief labor counsel at Boeing. Last year, Boeing filed an unfair labor practice charge with the NLRB against the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, accusing the union leaders of not bargaining in good faith on behalf of the company’s then-striking West Coast factory workers. Murphy was nominated to fill the seat last held by GOP-appointee John Ring that has been empty since late 2022, and his term would run through December 2027. Mayer, whose term would run until the end of 2029, would succeed current Chair Marvin Kaplan, once his term expires on Aug. 27.
The committee will also consider Rosario Palmieri to serve as the U.S. Department of Labor's Assistant Secretary of Labor for Policy. If confirmed to the post by the Senate, Palmieri would oversee DOL’s rulemaking process. He would oversee the department’s rulemaking process as it attempts to roll back labor regulations under Trump’s deregulation mandate.
