NCA’s Washington Weekly Update 4-11-22

Situational Awareness
The House and Senate are both in recess this week, so I am taking this opportunity to highlight all the government relations speakers and activities at our upcoming National Club Conference.

Representative Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) To Speak At Club Conference
NCA will welcome Congresswoman Nancy Mace to this year’s National Club Conference in Charleston, S.C., May 15-17. Representative Mace will talk about her success as the first female graduate of The Citadel and share her perspective as a freshman in the U.S. Congress.

She grew up in the Lowcountry of South Carolina and is the daughter of a retired Army General and retired school teacher. Before being sworn into Congress, she earned accolades as one of the most fiscally conservative members of the South Carolina General Assembly; she’s also one of the most pro-conservation lawmakers in the state. Mace grew up in Goose Creek, S.C., and when she dropped out of high school at age 17, her parents said, “If you’re going to stop going to school, you got to start going to work.” She immediately became a waitress at the local Waffle House. She earned her high school diploma a few months later by taking college classes at Trident Technical College in North Charleston.

She graduated magna cum laude from The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, where she was the school’s first female to graduate from its Corps of Cadets in 1999. In 2004, Nancy earned a masters degree from The University of Georgia. She is the author of In The Company of Men: A Woman at The Citadel, published by Simon & Schuster in 2001.

In 2008, she started her own company. Her background in business is in technology, PR & marketing and more recently commercial real estate before coming to Congress. Mace is the recipient of the 2019 Taxpayer Hero Award from the South Carolina Club for Growth; she has a 100% record of voting to lower taxes. She is also the recipient of the Champion Award from Palmetto Goodwill in her efforts in education and in helping those most in need receive job training; she has a 100% lifetime rating with Conservation Voters of South Carolina.

Charleston Mayor Tecklenburg To Open National Club Conference
Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg will kick off this year’s National Club Conference on Monday, May 16 by welcoming NCA to the city and sharing his knowledge and love for the city with attendees. Mayor Tecklenburg spent much of his career as a businessman and entrepreneur—a family legacy that began with the opening of his great-great-grandfather’s corner grocery store at St. Phillip and Wentworth streets in 1867. He founded Southern Oil Company, which he successfully owned and operated for nearly 20 years, in 1978. Upon selling the business, he was appointed to serve as Director of Economic Development for the City of Charleston, where he helped lead the revitalization of Upper King Street.

Legislation, Regulation and Elections On Conference Agenda
I am looking forward to attending the Conference this year to talk about legislation, regulations and elections impacting the private club community. As many WWU readers know, I am now serving my eighth year on the board of my country club in Alexandria, Va., and this involvement as a volunteer leader in the private club community helps shape my perspective on what and how policies in Washington affect clubs. Policy making in Washington is directly affected by federal elections held every two years and the elections this year are likely to shift the agenda significantly. I will walk attendees through the legislative and regulatory landscape and provide insight on how the elections will alter that landscape in 2023 and 2024.

ClubPAC to Hold Reception At Conference
ClubPAC will hold a reception for Conference attendees who have signed the prior authorization form, and will provide an inside look into the political engagement of NCA. ClubPAC has been undergoing a shift in how it approaches political giving by focusing on the policy goals of NCA and building meaningful relationships on both sides of the aisle. While NCA members who have signed a prior authorization form receive the monthly ClubPAC Insider, the reception will be an opportunity for us to discuss the elections in more detail and how ClubPAC is speaking for the private club community in the political process.
